It’s a slow weekend so we thought of taking the latest Google Chrome browser for a test drive. Chrome is lightning fast – almost, anyway – on our two-year-old netbook running on Linux and powered by a 1.6GHz Atom processor. It certainly renders web pages much faster than our Firefox browser (version 4.0b4) with ample [...]

And now he has announced his newest baby: a “Revolutionary Plug-in, Super Fast, Super Green, Solar Hybrid Vessel” said to be capable of generating enough surplus electricity to cruise carbon-neutral for [...]

Maritime institutions have got a compelling new reason to use Transas equipment for their GMDSS training programmes. The company’s TGS 5000 GMDSS simulator has earned the DNV Statement of Compliance as Class A Radio Communication Simulator according to DNV Standard No. 2.14, October 2007. The DNV stamp of approval comes as no surprise to us.

Greek-owned Gleamray Maritime has decided to shift to paperless navigation well ahead of the entry into force of the ECDIS carriage requirement (1st January 2011 for new ships, phased-in implementation for existing ones). You can believe Imtech CEO René van der Bruggen when he says: “The maritime economic climate is recovering there. This region is developing into an important centre for global shipping.” The gentleman has just come back from a visit to his company’s key business locations in China and Singapore. He has seen the uptrend with [...]

We’ve just got word from Transas that it has been awarded a contract to supply the Dar Es Salaam Maritime Institute in Tanzania with a  new simulator complex. Included in the lot is a full-mission NTPRO 5000 ship simulator, which so rocks that it could leave rival products in the dust. But what makes this [...]

Richard Sauter is seeing green again. So soon after introducing the “first zero carbon” megayacht Transcendence, his Sauter Carbon Offset Design has now unveiled Black Magic. The 120 metre-long, 4,000-tonne solar hybrid vessel is said to have the potential of reducing GHG emissions by 75-100% by harnessing energy from the sun, wind and waves. Like [...]

By Richard Sauter Sauter Carbon Offset Design regrets to announce that the Ice Cap at the North Pole is gone forever. While we stand around debating who’s responsible for global warming, polar bears drown in search of a place to live. It may be too late for most of them, but what about us? We [...]

A week ago, we got an email that tossed us right into the middle of a controversy. It was from yacht designer Guido de Groot of The Netherlands, who requested that we remove our recent blog post entitled “Enter the first zero carbon megayacht.” Mr de Groot claims that the images furnished by Toronto-based Sauter [...]

It has not been a month since we took a peek at the technology behind Sauter Carbon Offset Design’s ultra-green yacht Formula Zero. Now comes Transcendence, which is being billed as the world’s first zero carbon megayacht with top speed of 25 knots. The 49-metre long Transcendence achieves a 50 to 100% reduction in GHG [...]

To date, Transas has sold a total of 76 Navi-Trainer Professional 5000 simulator systems worldwide. Amongst its happy customers in Asia are the National Keelung Maritime Vocational High School in Taiwan, the Philippines’ ASTRA Marine International and Malaysian ship operator MISC Berhad. The latter was so awed by the NTPRO 5000, which was commercially released [...]

In late March, Sauter Carbon Offset Design made a big splash by announcing the “First Ultra Green Hi-Performance Superyacht of the Millennium.” Is it for real? Curious, we threw a few questions to the man behind it all. Richard Sauter impressed us as much with his idealism as with his engineering knowledge. He confirmed that [...]

The futuristic-looking PlanetSolar stole the show when she took part in the Hafengeburtstag Hamburg expo, which ran from 7th to 9th May. Less dramatic but still noteworthy was the announcement by Imtech N.V, a prestigious European engineering and ICT company, that it was acting as technology partner for the PlanetSolar project – further proof that [...]
