Leave Her, Johnny by Hazel Askew (shanty in MP3)

'Leave Her, Johnny' was traditionally sung when the ship was docked and the crew looked forward to leaving her after their last voyage. It speaks of the hardships of seafaring: "Oh the work was hard and the voyage was long,/ The sea was high and the gales were strong./ The food was bad and the ship was slow,/ But now ashore again we'll go." Performing is Hazel Askew, a London-based singer, musician and composer. The recording is courtesy of the English Folk Dance and Song Society and is published by Marine Café Blog for your personal, non-commercial use. (5.9 MiB, MP3, 4:18 minutes)
