Life on the Mississippi by Mark Twain

'Life on the Mississippi' was written by Mark Twain, one of America's most beloved writers. Published in 1883 with more than 300 illustrations, it is the author's memoir of the steamboat era on the Mississippi River before the American Civil War. Mark Twain was a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi (read his short biography here). His familiarity with the river and navigation and his skills as a raconteur make this book a must-read for literature and American history buffs. (40.4 MiB, PDF, 610 pages)
