The Music of the Waters by Laura Alexandrine Smith (book about sea songs)

Pubished in 1888, 'The Music of the Waters' by English musicologist Laura Alexandrine Smith (1861–1902) is believed to be the first book to include the tunes of sea shanties and ballads with their lyrics. Scottish writer R.M. Ballantine noted in the Introductory Note:"With the courage of an original investigator, our authoress has ventured to 'beard the lion in his den.' She has personally gone straight to the 'fo'c'sle,' and interviewed the sailors not only of her own but of other lands, and thus has gathered from the men's own lips, and from their manly voices, the words and melodies which are most popular among them" (7.9 MiB, PDF, 393 pages)
