Published in 1866, Toilers of the Sea (Les Travailleurs de la Mer) is not as popular as Victor Hugo's Notre-Dame de Paris (1831) and Les Misérables (1862). It is nonetheless a compelling sea adventure and love story, written by the most important of the French Romantic writers. The story revolves around Gilliat, a fisherman and outcast, who sets out to salvage the steam engine from a wrecked ship in order to win the hand of the owner's daughter.
