Toilers of the Sea (Les Travailleurs de la Mer) by Victor Hugo

Published in 1866, Toilers of the Sea (Les Travailleurs de la Mer) is not as popular as Victor Hugo's Notre-Dame de Paris (1831) and Les Misérables (1862). It is nonetheless a compelling sea adventure and love story, written by the most important of the French Romantic writers. The story revolves around Gilliat, a fisherman and outcast, who sets out to salvage the steam engine from a wrecked ship in order to win the hand of the owner's daughter.
