Plaques of appreciation are so commonplace they tend to be trivial. Nothing trivial, however, about the one given recently to International Container Terminal Services Inc by the US Department of Energy. It cited ICTSI’s setting up of a radiation detection system at the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) under the Megaports Initiative, launched in 2003 in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. To date, 27 ports worldwide have been equipped with scanners and other equipment to uncover nuclear and other radioactive materials in containers. Christian Gonzalez, ICTSI vice president and MICT general manager, is shown here receiving the plaque from Kimberly Prono, country manager for the Second Line of Defense Megaports Initiative of the US DoE National Nuclear Security Administration Office. ~Barista Uno
