Established on Jan 14, 1998, the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP) is a non-stock, non-profit maritime higher educational institution in the field of maritime education and training. It is owned, developed and operated by the Associated Marine Officersâ€™ and Seamenâ€™s Union of the Philippines (AMOSUP). MAAP is led by its pioneer President and AMOSUP Exec VP, VAdm Eduardo Ma R Santos, AFP (Ret) and chaired by AMOSUP President Dr Conrad Oca, the son of the late Capt. Gregorio S Oca who heads the Academyâ€™s board of governors, a group comprised by some of the most influential organizations in the international maritime industry. The first MAAP campus opened its doors to its first batch of student scholars in 1999 (Class 2003) with Dr Angelica M Baylon as its pioneer Executive Dean , Chair of the MAAP Board of Admissions . VMA Global College, formerly Visayan Maritime Academy, was founded in 1974 by the late Ambassador Roberto S. Benedicto which earned a well-deserved reputation for its quality Maritime Education until in May 1986 when it closed due to management decision. In SY 1987-88 the school re-opened under the management of Asian Mari-Tech Development Corporation (AMTDC) with a 10-year lease-purchase agreement. In December 1988, it was adjudged as one of the Top Ten Maritime Schools per survey conducted by the Philippine Association of Maritime Institutions (PAMI) and the Maritime Industry (MARINA). In June 1996, Asian Mari-Tech Dev't Corp. (AMTDC) acquired the properties of then Visayan Maritime Academy with its growth brought about by scholarship programs, international linkages for more training and job placements/offerings and added more non-maritime courses, the school was renamed VMA Global College.
