Seafarers’ rights: 3 simple wishes for 2025
The Sea, at Sunrise by Fujishima Takeji ((1867-1943)
There are any number of things one could wish for the shipping world in 2025. But out of prudence, I shall limit myself to three wishes. They all have to do with the rights and welfare of seafarers.

Greater respect for seafarers
The commodification and abuse of seafarers boil down to a lack of respect for them as human beings.

Enough of the sloganeering
What seafarers need is concrete action to protect their rights, not empty slogans.

More emphasis on human duty
There would be less need to talk about seafarers’ rights if all those who deal with seafarers performed their legal and moral obligations.
Perhaps the world shipping community will give serious thought to these simple matters. Or perhaps not. Old habits and old mindsets die hard.
