More boxships on order; what now?

We’ve just received an update on containership orders from Braemar Seascope‘s research unit, arguably one of the better sources of information on the subject. The latest figures make us feel slightly giddy: 52 boxships of 10,000 TEUs or more ordered since the start of the year, adding 765,000 TEUs to the global post-panamax boxship orderbook. As of 30th August 2011, a total of 158 units of this size aggregating 2.13 million TEUs were on order. This represents 48% of the fully cellular ships in the pipeline. (more…)

A look at the boxship order binge

2012 looks set to be the biggest year for containership newbuilding deliveries in history, in terms of TEU capacity entering the cellular fleet. According to Braemar Seascope‘s latest Containership Fleet Statistics, boxship deliveries in 2012 are expected to reach 1.55m TEU – beating the previous record of 1.52m TEU achieved during 2007. Braemar Seascope expects a cellular fleet expansion in the region of 9.5% for 2012, increasing the available capacity to 16.8m TEU. (more…)
