Safety: Escape from engine rooms
The UK P&I Club has done a splendid job of promoting maritime safety through its technical bulletins. The latest in the series, Bulletin No. 39 (2012) contains a two-page illustrated guide to engine room exit doors and escape routes. “Engine rooms by their very design,” the Club notes, “are hazard areas for all sorts of reasons to the unwary or unfamiliar – automatically starting machinery, loud noises, loud alarms, poorly indicated or signposted escape routes, blind areas that will lead you into a place with no exit, etc.” This bulletin can save life and limb.
