Nineteen manning agencies are facing sanctions after a recent Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) crackdown on illegal recruitment at Manila’s Luneta Park. None of them reportedly had the requisite Special Recruitment Authority (SRA) to hire workers outside their registered offices. We totally approve of the POEA action. The open solicitation for ship officers and ratings by representatives of crewing outfits doesn’t only violate the rules. It has turned the historic park into a marketplace where one can acquire and then market seafarers as though they were commodities. (more…)

Seafarers still hang around Manila’s Rizal Park, more popularly known as Luneta. But the festive atmosphere is gone following the closure last month of the recruitment booths seen in this photo. Crewing agencies were ordered to vacate the booths and dismantle their corporate signboards because they were recruiting outside their office premises, an illegal act. It’s a thankworthy move by the labour authorities. The area had practically been turned into a marketplace, (more…)

The UK-based International Committee on Seafarers Welfare (ICSW) is organising a “Party in the Park” on 26th June at Manila’s Rizal Park, better known by its old name, Luneta. The event is supported by the IMO, ILO, maritime labour unions and local crewing agencies. It comes a day after the close of the IMO Diplomatic Conference on STCW amendments in the Philippine capital. (more…)
