The waterfront can make little girls cry
A feature in the Maritime Union of Australia‘s Maritime Workers’ Journal, Summer 2011 issue, is the exact opposite of the stuff we usually read in the maritime press. It is an inspired and inspiring piece — so much so that we’ve decided to re-publish it here with the MWJ’s kind permission.
The article talks about why the wharves are a dangerous place and how Aussie waterfront employers are making it more so by “moving systematically to remove the use of hatchmen in operations.” The recent court ruling on the Patrick Stevedores case is clearly a victory for the waterfront hands, but their painful struggle continues.
