Poor loading procedures can cause solid bulk cargoes to shift, liquefy or catch fire. Anyone who wants to avoid this danger and protect ship and crew should check out Carrying solid bulk cargoes safely: Guidance for crews on the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes Code. It’s a great little booklet produced by the triumvirate of UK P&I Club, Lloyd’s Register and Intercargo for ‘on-the-spot’ use by ship officers and agents who arrange cargoes for loading. The UK P&I Club has done a splendid job of promoting maritime safety through its technical bulletins. The latest in the series, Bulletin No. 39 (2012) contains a two-page illustrated guide to engine room exit doors and escape routes. “Engine rooms by their very design,” the Club notes, “are hazard areas for all sorts of reasons to the unwary or unfamiliar – automatically starting machinery, loud noises, loud alarms, poorly indicated or signposted escape routes, blind areas that will lead you into a place with no exit, etc.” This bulletin can save life and limb. Not long ago, we commented on the “Tanker Contamination Claims Checklist” published by the UK P&I Club. The Club has now come out with a sequel pamphlet with the help of Capt David Payne of Associated Petroleum Consultants Ltd. Like the first, “How to prevent tanker cargo shortage claims” is only 12 pages long but covers in easy-to-understand checklist format all key points to consider when handling tanker cargoes – from the pre-loading phase through to discharge. We’ve always considered the UK P&I Club one of the better sources of practical information when it comes to the nitty-gritty of shipping. The Club, after all, is the one that coughs up the money should problems arise and a cargo claim is lodged. In light of the dangers that ships and seafarers continue to face in the loading and transport of coal, the UK P&I Club has published a simple “How to monitor coal cargoes from Indonesia” checklist. Self-heating incidents involving coal cargoes have been problematic for centuries. It was a much-feared hazard in the days of wooden sailing ships, and has continued on since the advent of modern steamships.
