In Manila, the authorities will give free rides to seafarers on the Metro Rail Transit in the early morning and late afternoon. In London, the Lloyd’s Maritime Academy will offer discounts on some of its online courses for seafarers. Elsewhere, seafarers’ charities will probably throw parties for the lads and their families. Tomorrow, the 25th of June, is the Day of the Seafarer. What can we give on this occasion? Nothing much, just a simple prayer for all seafarers.
It’s a short prayer – an invocation, to be more precise – and it goes like this:
May the love of family and homeland keep burning in the hearts of seafarers as they endure the loneliness and drudgery of toiling at sea;
May peace and harmony reign on every ship, all hands working as one happy family;
May the angels and saints safeguard all seafarers and shield them from the murderous embrace of pirates;
May the voice of the seafarers be heard more audibly in the corridors of power where the rules for their profession are laid;
May those who profit from the labours of seafarers have the wisdom to treat seafarers as ends in themselves, not as a means to an end; and
May those who profess to champion the rights and well-being of seafarers always put their words into action.
