On 22nd November this year, the European Commission lifted the ban on Georgian seafarers. Three years earlier, it had withdrawn EU recognition of Georgia’s crew certificates because the national authorities failed to effectively monitor the maritime schools and address the problem of forged certificates. The ban was bitter medicine but it benefited the patient. Could a similar ban have the same effect on the Philippines? (more…)

Prudence dictates that we don’t completely discount the possibility of an EU ban on Filipino seafarers. We’re hoping, of course, that it won’t come to pass and that the EU will give the Filipino seafarer factory a thumbs up despite certain shortcomings. But what if? We made some quick taps on our calculator and the numbers tell us that the maritime bureaucrats in Manila had better do double-time work for the sake of everyone. (more…)
