According to London-based Videotel, more than 52,000 crew and 1,600 ships now use its webFTA (Fleet Training Administrator) system – an online solution that allows a company access to all the training records of its shipboard personnel across the fleet. We won’t be surprised if the figures will go on rising. Not only does webFTA provide an easy way to schedule rank-specific, statutory and non-statutory training, create reports and upload certificates. Don’t bet on it. The Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act 2010, due to become US law very shortly, requires tighter security measures on cruise ships carrying more than 250 passengers on international voyages which call at any US port. Not least important: crimes on the high seas should be reported to the FBI and the US Coast Guard. The new protocol will impact on shipboard routines, ship design, crew training and perhaps the whole cruise ship environment.

Unfortunately, as a vessel owner or operator, you have probably been faced with a situation where one of your crew members has allegedly become sick or injured while in the service of the vessel. As you are aware, once this injury or illness is reported to the company, the duties of providing maintenance and cure under the Jones Act begin.
