We continue our popular Alternative Maritime Glossary, this time focusing on three-letter acronyms or abbreviations (TLAs). The TLA idea was suggested by a reader, James Tweed, managing director of Coracle Online Ltd. The thing with acronyms is that they can have more than one meaning. Our post last week, ‘Alternative maritime glossary for the times,’ has turned out to be one of our most popular. We, therefore, thought of adding a few more entries to the list. We hope that the small collection of maritime terms will drive home the message that there’s often a wide gap between language and reality. As a result, all of us would do well to look beyond the standard definitions of the words and phrases we use. (more…)
