Watching the Maritime Greed Index

crocodileIf there’s an Air Pollution Index, a Corruption Perception Index and a Poverty Gap Index, why not a Greed Index? It is, after all, human greed that fuels the despoilation of the environment, drives government officials to steal and increases the divide between the haves and the have-nots. The phenomenon may not be as easy to quantify, but it is nonetheless palpable. One must either be blind or apathetic not to notice it in the actions of individuals and corporations – not least of all, in the maritime arena. (more…)

A prayer for the Day of the Seafarer

In Manila, the authorities will give free rides to seafarers on the Metro Rail Transit in the early morning and late afternoon. In London, the Lloyd’s Maritime Academy will offer discounts on some of its online courses for seafarers. Elsewhere, seafarers’ charities will probably throw parties for the lads and their families. Tomorrow, the 25th of June, is the Day of the Seafarer. What can we give on this occasion? Nothing much, just a simple prayer for all seafarers. (more…)
